LaVendore Rogue’s principle songwriters, JoJo Burgess and Joel Fisk, first met in 2003 on the day they both left home to start new lives in Britain’s oldest town; Colchester.
On the day they both moved into a moldy house share, it is unlikely that they would have expected, 10 years on, to have both quit the music degrees that brought them together to pursue a shared musical ideology and vision. A journey which has seen them hone their craft in several unfit-for-human-consumption house shares, write and record three and a half albums together and tour throughout mainland Europe.
The Jekyll and Hyde-esque onstage personas of Burgess and Fisk might suggest the two are very different characters. Having created a close brotherhood through their shared passion for Delta Blues, Rock n Roll and Americana, they both share the same skepticism toward life, as well as tastes in cheap rolling tobacco, red wine, bourbon and anything else that comes their way.
Following 3 years working together as a duo and in their first band, JellyRoll, in 2008 they formed Hokie Joint with Stephen ‘Cupsey’ Cutmore, who they met through an musiciann-for-hire website. Introducing the pair to seasoned professionals Fergie Fulton and Giles King, Hokie Joint made a marked impression on the UK and European Blues scenes.
The band went on to perform with the likes of ZZ Top, Steve Winwood, Moby, Jamie Cullum and Booker T among others.
The release of their second album, “The Music Starts To Play”, saw them top the Amazon Hot New Releases chart, as well as a top 10 spot in both the Blues and Indie chart.
The album received several plays on BBC Radio 2, which led to a session at Maida Vale studios in 2010.
Members of the band received multiple awards nominations between 2008 and 2012. Highlights include Stephen Cutmore’s victory as “Drummer of the Year” in the British Blues Awards, as well as the band winning “Best Dressed Act” in Bronte Blues Club’s awards.
In 2011, JoJo’s life took an unexpected turn, as his future fiancée who’d dragged him from the verge of alcoholism learnt she was pregnant following an eye-opening trip to Israel and Jordon. After 8 traumatic months of pregnancy, JoJo’s daughter Roxanne was born, 7 weeks premature and barely breathing.
In 2013, Hokie Joint has been mutually disbanded, having reached its peak and due to the Burgess and Fisk’s longing to reach beyond their Blues influences.
To fill the void in the down time between Hokie Joint and LaVendore Rogue, Joel took Cupsey and Rob on the road with his Blues outfit, Joel Fisk & The Breakdown.
During JoJo’s six penniless months off the road, JoJo’s life was altered forever as the effects of his daughters’ prematurity were realised, following a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.
With a lust to provide his daughter a small fortune for a life changing operation and with a belly full of pain and anguish, the road and his most supportive friend beckoned. After several months of writing and rehearsing, and deciding what to call this project, Burgess, Fisk, Cutmore and Barry commenced recording LaVendore Rogue’s debut EP, “What’s The Meaning Of LaVendore Rogue?”
It was during this time they recruited close friend Warren Lynn on keyboards. Just weeks later, their debut public performance was at the first ‘Help Roxi Walk’ benefit, in the town they now proudly call home.
“What’s The Meaning Of LaVendore Rogue” was released in late 2013, with supporting video for “Gangsters, Thieves & Villains”.
The band have gone on to perform at venues such as The 100 Club and Colchester Arts Centre with the likes of Ian Siegal, Dave Arcari and The Pretty Things.
Having spent this time writing new material, LaVendore Rogue entered the studio in April 2014 to record their debut full-on electric album. With the help of Chris West (producer for Richard Ashcroft and Nick Cave among others), the album was released on Friday 13th March 2015.
The band will be touring in support of “Light Up With LaVendore Rogue” throughout 2015.
Having shared everything from hotel rooms to girlfriends, Burgess and Fisk’s love and hate relationship continues; slightly older and slightly wiser, drawing inspiration from life and everything surrounding it, these two Rogues continue struggling on together, knowing the fate of friendship will lead them to success.
